We are extremely chuffed at Inspiring Wines this week as we have new wines on our list from the Australian maverick producers The Magpie Estate. And both are absolute crackers!
Rag & Bone Riesling
First up is their Rag & Bone Riesling, a fabulous wine from the Eden Valley with it’s rocky, sandy soils, give this beauty a real ‘rocky’ edge, I don’t mean by that you’ll be running up steps in front of grand public buildings to an 80’s soft rock soundtrack. But that it has a distinct minerality. Like licking a rock! It has zest, lime and texture coming out of it’s ears. Lean, fresh, crisp are all words that can describe this wine, bright and zingy are two more words that also do. If you enjoy a riesling as much as we do, it doesn’t get much better than this.
The Mixed Thing
Next up is The Mixed Thing. A sumptuous blend of Cinsault, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot, Sangiovese and Grenache. Do you see why they called it ‘The Mixed Thing’? This is a fruit filled red that can only be good for you, everyone keeps banging on about eating more fruit and veg, can’t help you with the veg but fruit, oh yes! By the bucket load! This wine is scarily moreish, a full on glass of red wine. Summer fruits all over the show and massively refreshing, if you weren’t feeling a slight buzz you’d think you were drinking something from a nutri bullet. A sensational wine in every respect. This wine is why we do what we do at Inspiring Wines.
The Magpie Estate was created by two men, back in 1993, probably over a bottle or two of something very lovely, they came up with the idea to start making wines Northeast of Adelaide that paid homage to their love of the Rhone Valley and it’s native grapes. Experienced winemaker Rolf Binder and wine merchant Noel Young sobered up and established the Magpie Estate in the Northern Barossa Valley. Here it would fully utilise Rolf’s insight and years of knowledge of the area. Magpie Estate labels revere the humble magpie and celebrate a superstitious theme.
Try one or both of these wines, you really won’t regret it. They are both superb wines and great value for this level of quality.
