Our Inspiring Suggestions for Easter
You might be planning on having the family around for the full-on roast lunch, you could be entertaining friends or maybe you are planning something a whole lot quieter? I’m reticent to suggest it, as it’s likely to jinx it but you never know, there might even be an opportunity to dust off the barbeque and treat yourself to a little alfresco eating and drinking?
Whatever you have planned and especially if it involves the family you’ll be needing a glass or two of something very lovely to take the edge off. Here are our ‘inspiring’ suggestions to help you choose your wine for whatever you are planning to get up.
The Sunday roast is obviously a stalwart of the Easter weekend, it comes in many forms these days, these are our suggestions for the main players:
Great wines with beef
Great wines with beef
If you are going for the classic roast beef then you should be seeking out a medium to full bodied red, something to match the rich flavour and natural juices of the beef. It is still sometimes argued that matching a wine with beef means you have to splash the cash to get quality but that’s one of those myths that still does the rounds. That said, if you go for a classic Bordeaux then you can find yourself on the wrong end of £40 a bottle quite easily. However, these days it is ridiculously simple to find a quality red that will have your beef singing and won’t leave you forced to live on beans on toast for the rest of the month.
Take a look at a good Rioja, a Reserva if you can stretch. You will never go wrong with a Argentinian Malbec with beef or an Aussie Shiraz. And for something a bit different why not look at an Italian Barbera?
Great wines with Chicken or Goose
Great wines with Chicken or Goose
The purists might say if you are eating white meat it should be white wine however here at Inspiring Wines we don’t subscribe to that kind of traditionalist view. Just drink what you fancy, there is absolutely no reason you can’t enjoy a red with your roast bird. It would be good to go for something a little lighter than if you were having red meat but that doesn’t mean you have to compromise on flavour or quality of the wine.
Pinot Noir is a great choice, if you want something really special look at Oregon for some fabulous Pinot Noir, New Zealand also produces a range of quality Pinot Noir. You could try a Syrah or even a Spanish Grenache. If you do want to stick with white wine, it may be your preference, then an oaked Chardonnay or a Viognier would really complement your roast.
Great wines with lamb
Great wines with lamb
Lamb can be a tricky one, it’s has lots of flavour and will have a level of fat to compete with so you need something to cut through. Look to Spain for a good Rioja, again a Reserva if you can stretch (it simply means the wine has had a minimum 12 months in oak), a peppery Shiraz or a Cabernet/Merlot blend would both work, or look to Italy for a Chainti Classico.
Great wines with roasted or baked fish
Great wines with roasted or baked fish
Fish is usually a bit more straight forward, if you are baking or roasting a meaty fish then you can’t go wrong with a white Burgundy or you could try a Muscadet, an Italian Gavi or even look to Alsace for a dry Riesling.
Great wines with Friends

If you are not planning on eating that much and prefer nibbles and chat then why not try a bit of fizz to get the conversation flowing, it doesn’t have to cost the earth. There is some real quality fizz coming out of Italy and Spain these days. Take a look at Franciacorta for example, Prosecco of course or maybe a Durello or quality Cava.
If bubbles aren’t your thing, Albarino or Picpoul de Pinet are both great fruity easy drinking whites as is a good New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc. For a very quaffable red take a look at an Italian Merlot, South African Cinsault or a Pinot Noir from New Zealand.
Best wines for a barbeque
Best wines for a barbeque
Finally on our list of suggestions is our old friend the Barbie! You’ll have been checking the weather forecast for several days and finally the decision is taken, we are going for it! “looks like it’ll be dry at least” someone whispers with limited confidence… the Barbie is on!
Then follows a trip to the garage for charcoal, (for Easter is the time it starts to appear on the forecourt of garages across the land) and a root through the garden shed for something to light it, and no, petrol intended for the mower won’t do!..you’ll need to ring and text around everyone to let them know it’s happening and get down to the local butchers for meat! (Or your supermarket but here at IW we always try to support local small business if we can…).
Finally try to give the rusting barbeque a clean and kick yourself for not cleaning it better before you put it away last year, whilst also convincing yourself the heat will kill any lingering germs anyway…
So, once all that is complete you’ll be needing a drink but, what to serve? Traditionally the BBQ menu leans heavily towards red meat, burgers, sausages, spicy chicken and all that. All of which are very likely to enjoy some level of “caramelisation” during the cooking process and the occasional charring! You need a wine that can match these big flavours, a big bruising Cabernet for example, a full on Zinfandel, a peppery Shiraz or a full bodied Argentinian Malbec would all do the job nicely.
If huge hunks of meat are not your thing and you are planning on cooking something a little lighter such as fish or or shellfish then you can’t go wrong with a Viognier or something a little more easy drinking like a Portuguese white or a Riesling. If the food is a bit of a distraction and you simply want to be sipping wine in the sun (the food always takes ages anyway), why not try Torrontes, a Pinot Gris or a Semillon for something a bit different?
Whatever you decide to do? And you may just want to do nothing at all! Don’t forget we have free delivery available on any 6 bottles or more at Inspiring Wines right now.
We can’t predict the weather but we can provide the wine. And with premium delivery for free, everyone’s a winner baby…that’s the truth!
Happy Easter everyone!
