Mas Macià Cava Brut Nature Reserva
The Producer:
The Can Macià estate dates back 800 years and has stayed in the hands of the same family since it was established. Located in Odena, around 50 Km north west of Barcelona, and only 10km from the foothills of Montserrat, the estate has over 35 hectares of vineyard together with forest and wheat fields – where they produce both still and sparkling wines.
Jordi Casanovas Bohigas is a direct descendant of this family. He, together with his daughter Maria Casanovas Giró, run the winery and estate. Their first Cava was released in 1936, but much of their production was sold only as grapes or wine to other Catalan producers. However, investment in the cellars in 2000 led to renewed emphasis on high quality estate-bottles wines.
At Can Macià low rainfall, low yielding vines, slow but complete ripening of the grapes and high acidity produces good sparkling wines. The family also have the Can Batllevell estate of 54 hectares in Gelida (half-way between Odena and Barcelona) – where limestone soils and Mediterranean climate lead to early maturing grapes.
These estates combined mean that the family have access to Macabeo, Xarel-lo, Parellada, Garnatxa Blanca, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Cabernet Sauvignon – with some vines over 50 years old.
The Vineyard
Made from classic Cava cultivated on the 60 hectare Mas Macia estate in the Penedes region near Barcelona.
The Winery
Brut Nature is created from Macabeo, Xarel lo and Parellada, using the traditional Cava method. The finished Cava has very small, fine, persistent bubbles, which are a result of the low temperatures in the wine. The wine sees extended maturation (22 months) before disgorgement to enhance the complex, fruity aromas. For ‘Nature’ the dosage is at zero sugar levels.
