The Underworld Grenache Blanc
The Underworld thrusts a shovel into that unseen land of sticks and stones, of broken bones, the kingdom of roots. Above the ground the vines frilly dance, its buxom sun-drenched bounty is nothing without the sober grind of roots blindly winding into the Earth, the hidden hero of flavour, of place.
Producer – Made by Boutinot
MADE BY BOUTINOT encompasses vineyards and cellars primarily in France, Italy, South Africa and England as well as long standing relationships with hundreds of winegrowers throughout other parts of the world e.g. Australia, New Zealand, Chile, Argentina, Spain and the USA. The wines are crafted by both vinifying fruit from our own vineyards and by selecting and blending wine from partner growers.
The Vineyard
From old vine Piekernierskloof fruit blended with younger Paarl fruit (hence Western Cape). Grenache Blanc belongs in South Africa, where drought-resistant vines are the only future for this increasingly dry region. 70% 40 year old unirrigated bush vines from Piekernierskloof plus 30% younger bush vines from Paarl. The Paarl component is barrel fermented in 4-6 year old 500L French oak. The remainder is wild fermented in stainless steel with 5g/l residual sugar to round off the spice a little.
What does it go with?
Fresh oysters, shellfish, roast chicken dishes. Fabulous on it’s own too.
